Exploring the Past, Discovering Future Careers

Cary-Grove junior, Laura Labuda, discovered her passion for history can lead to many career paths while interning at Black Point Estate in Lake Geneva. Through her micro-internship, she experienced firsthand what it takes to preserve and share the past, observing tours, exploring archives, and learning from professionals in the field.
“The first day, I observed a tour and learned about all of the history of this place and the family, and the second day I did collections, going through archives,” said Laura Labuda. “It was very valuable because it helped me feel more confident about my interest in history and all the other jobs I could do.”
She gained insight into careers in museums, collections management, and historical research.
“She’s been super helpful with a variety of projects from collections care to helping with our tours,” said Brittany Niequist, programming manager.
Labuda says it was a great opportunity.
“I thought this would only come after high school, but now I have a better understanding of what I want to do, and it’s nice to have while I’m in high school,” said Labuda.
